I think you've put your finger on the beginning of a big shift. Disk is the new tape. SDD will successfully fill the role of top-tier storage for data at rest. Disk is already exhibiting tape-like characteristics as you've pointed out: capacity, problems with accessibility (the disk version is related to RAID rebuilds).
It will take years, but the shift has begun.

Sure, I was getting at a similar point when I referred to the DMX as a melting pot into which it seems every form of storage, plus its dog, is thrown in and expected to co-exist……..

May be the move from EMC will give credence to SSD as a truly viable form of media (not that it isn’t already but sometimes it takes a name like EMC to step up before enterprises start to buy in…) and actually strengthen the position of other SSD array manufacturers. Their position could be changed to "…. EMC obviously see the huge benefits of SSD and trust it in their flagship product…. But if you really want to reap the full benefits of SSD, then you need to put it in one of our boxes rather than paying for it to go into a DMX where it is throttled because of the hardware surrounding it….."

I also wonder how the Symmetrix architecture might have to change to fully realise the benefits of SSD. May be they can learn a lesson or two from TMS and others?

Whether you buy into it in a Symm or a Tag or not, its certainly gunna be interesting to see how it pans.

I guess I'm still not sold on SSD in a centralized array. Why would I put it there? Why be bottlnecked by all the interconnects? Makes no sense. For less money, you can get 10x+ (if not more) the performance out of SSD on a PCI-E card.I also notice EMC STILL hasn't provided a single benchmark for these *ultra fast* SSD's. Until then, it's all marketers drumming up excitement over what may be a complete flop. http://www.fusionio.com/

Yep I know where you're coming from. Ive not done that much battling with Exchange personally but know of plenty who have.
Have you had any joy with your recent percieved performance probs? Do you think your situation would be helped with some SSD based LUNs or do you think your problem is with Exchange itself and not the underlying storage?

Hmm.. Stotek might revitalise the SSD from way back in 1978... That would get EMC and Hitachi excited as everyone loves competition.. right?

I think the Terminator trilogy was not based on Skynet, it was based on Exchange 2003. If it was never devised, our storage arrays would be better utilised. Arnie would be out to save the space and horrible performance that the future is destined to encounter.
